Martin’s story

At the Hospice, we offer a Wellbeing Programme to help support the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of our patients. Martin, from Westfield, shared how the programme has helped him manage his pain and support his mental health. “I have spinal stenosis, which causes pain because the nerves in my spine are compressed, and it makes walking difficult. My GP referred me here for physiotherapy. I met with Physiotherapists, Matt and Anna.”

Martin joined Moving Forward, one of our Wellbeing Groups focused on supporting his physical goals. He then took part in Drum Fit sessions, which he really enjoyed because he loves music. “The drumming helps me relax, but it also helps with managing emotions. My favourite song we did was We Will Rock You by Queen.”

The Guided Relaxation group also helps Martin find calm. “I have depression, and the relaxation takes you out of yourself. You almost breathe everything out, and it makes me feel at peace with the world.” The sense of community and support in the groups has also been beneficial for Martin. “It’s nice to be around other people. Coming here gives me a bit of an escape from things. You can talk to different people, and you get support from the whole team here too.”
