Katie’s grandmother wished to spend her final days at home, surrounded by family. With Hospice support, she was able to do so, receiving medical care and support while remaining in a familiar environment.

Katie’s grandmother had concerns about dying alone. “My grandma was terrified of dying without her family around her,” Katie shared. With support from the Hospice, she was able to stay at home, where she had access to personal comforts such as family photos, fresh flowers, and her dog, Bertie.

The Hospice team provided regular visits and phone support, helping to manage symptoms and adjust medication as needed. “My mum could call and get help immediately,” Katie explained. “That made the process much easier.”

The flexibility of home-based care also allowed family members to visit without restrictions. “We could all be there whenever we needed to be,” Katie said. “That meant everything to us.”

Hospice employees worked alongside Katie’s family, ensuring her grandmother remained as comfortable as possible. “They were so kind,” Katie recalled. “You never felt like they were just doing a job—they truly cared.”

When Katie’s grandmother died, the Hospice team supported her mother. “She didn’t have to be alone, and I knew she was being supported until I could get there,” Katie said.

Her family’s experience highlights the role of St Michael’s Hospice in providing medical, emotional, and practical support for both patients and those important to them during difficult times.
