We sat down with Sav, to speak about his experience of our Wellbeing Programme. He first received support for his breathing. He shared, “it was so wonderful for me to experience because, I’ve been in and out of hospitals and no one had shown me how to breathe, and I was struggling.”
“I was asked about my situation, and what I get up to. I said that I go shopping from my house sometimes. I like to walk down to the Co-op, but I struggle to get myself there. The Wellbeing Team taught me how to manage this better, we worked out places to stop to get my breath back along the way. It was wonderful, I learnt so much from them, they’re great teachers.”
Sav shares, “Since I’ve been coming here, my lifestyle has changed. I was in a terrible way. I’m not sure I’d still be here if it wasn’t for the amazing people at the Hospice. All the people here are wonderful, gifted people.”
Since having support with his breathing, Sav has joined the Growing Together gardening group. He says, “It’s wonderful. I’ve always been a keen gardener, but I can’t do what I used to anymore. My mum was a great gardener. We had a very big garden in London, but I wasn’t allowed to touch anything. I took to gardening after my mum died, it’s very therapeutic, especially when you can watch whatever you’ve planted grow.”
“I look forward to coming to the Growing Together group and doing a bit of gardening, seeds, watering, whatever is planned for that day. There’s always so many things to do, and new things to learn – I never knew how many types of snails and slugs there are! We all work together, which is brilliant, and I’ve met some lovely people, who I look forward to seeing”.
“The place I’m in now has a lovely little garden, I had big plans for it, but I fell ill and haven’t been able to do it. I feel confident when I come to the Hospice to do gardening. At home on my own I can’t do it, but with the Wellbeing Team, I have the confidence to continue gardening, which is wonderful.”
We depend on the generosity of our community to help us support individuals like Sav and are always thankful for any donation, no matter how large or small.
