For Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the incredible people who give their time, skills and heart to support the Hospice. Today, we’re shining a light on Jeff, a much‑loved part of our Fundraising Team.

“I volunteer in a couple of areas in the Hospice Fundraising Team. My main job is driving the fundraising van around Hastings and Rother, swapping out collection pots from the local businesses who support us. I also help at the Open Gardens events, usually on the gate or helping with car park marshalling.

“I first got involved about 15 years ago through my wife, who also volunteered for Open Gardens. She died at the Hospice around three years ago, so I took a short break, but when I returned, I started helping with the vans. I love driving, and I really enjoy the company of Joe and Vern. We have great conversations on our rounds, and Vern and I often swap music playlists.

“The Hospice is such a friendly, welcoming place. My volunteer friends feel like extended family. Everyone has their own reason for being here, but many of us share a personal connection to the care the Hospice provided to someone we loved. It’s comforting to be around people who understand that, and to be able to talk openly while we volunteer.

“One of my standout memories of volunteering was at an Open Garden in Rye. The weather was awful—absolutely pouring down—and we were all soaked. The homeowner came out with a huge tray of doughnuts to cheer us up. It was such a simple gesture, but it really lifted our spirits.

“Over time, I’ve realised that all the small things volunteers do add up to something meaningful. We help raise awareness of the Hospice and the services it provides, and that feels important. The Hospice is a much happier place than people imagine. It’s a special place, and volunteering here is genuinely worthwhile.”
