Music has a unique way of reaching us when words feel too hard to find. In times of grief, emotions can be complex, overwhelming, or difficult to express, and music offers a gentle, non-verbal outlet for those feelings. Singing or playing an instrument can help release tension, calm the nervous system and lift mood, even if only briefly. Familiar songs may hold memories of loved ones, while making music with others can reduce the sense of isolation that often accompanies bereavement. Importantly, music does not ask us to explain our loss or find the “right” words, it simply allows us to be present. Shared rhythm, harmony and breath can create moments of connection and belonging, helping people feel supported without pressure.
For those who feel this might be helpful, St Michael’s Hospice offers welcoming musical activities that are open to everyone, regardless of experience. Our new Community Band has recently begun at the Arthur Easton Centre, delivered in partnership with The Music Well. It is open to anyone who would enjoy making music in a relaxed and supportive setting.
This is not a band for “accomplished” musicians. It is for people who haven’t played in years, are just starting out, or feel out of practice. Having a go matters far more than getting it right.
For those navigating bereavement, coming together to make music can be a gentle way to reconnect, and feel part of something shared – without pressure. The band is currently in a pilot phase, so this is a great time to join and help shape its future.
If you don’t play an instrument how about trying out our Community Choir? We’ve been meeting for over a year and we are always open to new members. No auditions, no need to read music – just a willingness to sing (or give it a try).
The choir has become a particularly supportive and uplifting space for people who have experienced bereavement. Singing together offers connection, comfort and shared meaning, without any need to talk or explain.
We are currently preparing for involvement in the Good Grief Festival in May, a festival celebrating love and loss. Our aim is to create a warm, inclusive sing-along event featuring well-loved songs often chosen at funerals, alongside special selections from the choir. It’s a wonderful time to join.
Why not come along and try out our Community Band or our Choir. If you’d like to find out more please email Martin Symons at or call 01424 445177 (x273).
