When people think of charity trustees, they often picture those with plenty of free time. At St Michael’s Hospice, our Board includes people who work full‑time but want to make a difference in their community – including Simon, who shares why he chose to help shape the future of the Hospice. Here, we asked Simon some questions to reflect on his role as a Trustee.

Q: Why did you decide to become a Trustee at St Michael’s Hospice?
I’ve been very fortunate in my career and wanted to give something back. The Hospice has supported my family and friends over the years, and they provide vital services to the community. Joining the Board felt like the perfect way to contribute and share some of the knowledge I’ve gained.

Q: Isn’t being a Trustee very time-consuming?
People often think being a Trustee involves a lot of work. Yes, there’s work involved -reading papers, contributing ideas, and taking part in strategic conversations – but it’s all structured and manageable. The Hospice is very understanding and flexible, which makes it possible to balance the role with a busy career.

Q: What are your priorities as a Trustee?
One of my key focuses is encouraging greater diversity on the Board and across the Hospice. Age or background should never be barriers. People often underestimate the value they can bring. Younger people and those with different experiences can offer fresh ideas that help the Hospice grow. Diversity of thought is essential for achieving our ambitions.

Q: What excites you most about the future of the Hospice?
I’m passionate about using digital channels to share the Hospice’s story with a wider audience. It’s important to highlight the incredible work they do – not just in end-of-life care, but across a range of services that support people and families.

Q: What would you say to someone considering becoming a Trustee?
Go for it! It’s a rewarding way to make a real difference in your community.
