The Hastings Half Marathon is iconic local event, famed for the hilly landscape and supportive atmosphere. It also provides an opportunity for runners to challenge themselves and raise money for local charities. Find out from Lydia, and other St Michael Hospice participants, why they have chosen to run for us.
“The 14th January 2024 marks 15 years since my wonderful Mum passed away from breast cancer, aged just 42. I have always wanted to challenge myself to do something in her memory and to make her proud, and 2024 is the year! Mum was cared for in her final weeks by the amazing team at St Michael’s Hospice in Hastings. They also supported us as a family both before and after her death, something we will always be grateful for. Knowing that Mum was cared for at the Hospice with such compassion and kindness, with her quality of life being the first priority still brings much comfort to me all these years later. I hope any money raised can help allow the Hospice to continue to provide the amazing care that they do.” says Lydia.
“I’m running the Hastings Half Marathon because the Hospice is so special to us as a family. They cared for my dad and he passed away there in 2018. I always said I’d like to run the Hastings Half Marathon for the Hospice and for my dad, as he ran it many times too. This year in particular, as it’s the 40th anniversary of the marathon and I’m 40 in 2024 too!” says Andrea.
“I lost my father to dementia at just 61 in October 2023. My stepmother cared for him up until the last few days of his life at home. The Hospice allowed my stepmother to have some final time with her husband without the physical and mental burden of caring for him. We were all looked after by dedicated, professional and friendly staff who knew exactly what to do and say at all times. I am running the Hastings Half Marathon for St Michael’s Hospice to give myself a positive focus at this time of grief and to show my appreciation to the wonderful people who work and volunteer there, so that more people can have the dignity of end of life care in a beautiful environment.” says Matt.
