Ward Volunteer

Days: Dependent upon availability

Location: The Hospice, Upper Maze Hill, St Leonards on Sea, TN38 0LB

What is the role?

Under the supervision of the nursing staff you will help provide emotional and practical support to patients whilst they are staying in our In-Patient Unit.

What will I be doing?
  • Providing person centred support to patients who are receiving treatment whilst staying on the In-Patient Unit
  • Meeting and greeting patients, families and visitors  when they arrive on the wards, settling them in and making tea and coffee
  • Liaising with reception informing them of changes on the wards
  • Listening and talking with patients, their families and friends in a caring and sensitive manner and inform qualified staff of any issues
  • Supporting patients to take part in programmes of social and recreational activities for patients, in conjunction with volunteers and staff
  • Supporting patients in continuing their interests and hobbies
  • Taking and collecting orders from patients for goods from the Coffee Shop
  • Supporting patients to access services and the grounds of St Michael’s Hospice if desired
  • Supporting staff during meal times and sitting with a patient if needed
  • Helping maintain the cleanliness of the food preparation areas eg loading/unloading dishwasher, cleaning surfaces etc.
  • Assisting in the replenishment of the clinical stores
  • Helping to promote and maintain an environment conducive to meeting the needs of patients, their relatives and friends
  • Reporting to the Senior Nurse on duty any compliments or complaints as well as any requests for information by patients or their visitors
  • Attending relevant training, support meetings and supervisions as required
  • Understanding and demonstrating relevant policies and procedures during your volunteering at St Michael’s Hospice.
