Spiritual Support Volunteer

Days: This will be agreed between you and the Spiritual Support Lead

Location: The Hospice, Upper Maze Hill, St Leonards on Sea, TN38 0LB

What is the role?

As part of the Spiritual Support Team you will be helping patients to explore their own life journey, whilst also providing support to families and carers during their time at St Michael’s Hospice.

What will I be doing?

Under the direction of the Spiritual Support Lead (SSL) you will be:

  • Spending time with patients and their families
  •  Helping create a safe space for patients to explore and identify their unique life experience and journey
  •  Engaging in active listening with people, helping them to share their life narratives
  • Carrying out specific activities with patients and their families as required (eg reading poetry, sacred text, praying, meditating, sitting in silence, relaxation and visualisation)
  • Involved with activities and services that support spiritual wellbeing of patients, families/carers and staff, (eg attending communion, running relaxation groups, festivals celebrations, and rituals etc)
  •  Accompanying patients and families to the Multi faith room or Chapel as required
  • Informing  the SSL, or staff if SSL not present, if a particular faith leader is required, or a particular need is identified that requires specific attention relating to someone’s faith/religion and or and in connection to their care needs
  • Feeding back any significant issues that occur during your time with patients to nursing team and or SSL
  • Identifying when issues require the input of other Hospice staff (eg Social worker, Counsellor, Physiotherapist, Bereavement Support) and inform SSL
  • Providing objective person centred support for individuals, when they are thinking about how to talk to family members
  • Supporting the development of the provision of meaningful spiritual care resources
  • Attending relevant training and supervision/reflective practice as required
  • Understanding and demonstrating relevant policies and procedures during your volunteering at St Michael’s Hospice
  • Undertaking training and then enter significant conversations and contacts on St Michael’s Hospice electronic patient system, Crosscare.
