Bereavement Supporter

Days: This will be agreed between you and the bereavement team

Location: The Hospice, Upper Maze Hill, St Leonards on Sea, TN38 0LB and clients homes

What is the role?

Under the guidance and supervision of the department team, you will
provide scheduled support and counselling to the clients of the Hospice
Bereavement service.

What will I be doing?

Under the direction of the Bereavement Team -

  • Delivering bereavement support/counselling to clients using the Bereavement service both at the Hospice and in clients homes where appropriate (six months after starting) based on a 12 session model
  • Visiting clients in their own homes and at the Hospice, operating under the Hospices’ Lone Worker Policy and using the ‘Buddy System’ 
  • Counselling /supporting clients based on your own level of training and experience
  • Participating in group supervision for two hours, fortnightly or monthly dependent upon your experience
  • Managing administrative duties; keeping brief and objective client notes, recording session dates, checking emails and liaising with the hospice team as necessary 
  • Providing client attendances/cancelations statistics at the end of every month when requested
  • Supporters must see at least two clients each week and attend group supervision on a fortnightly or monthly basis (supporters who use their own car must be insured for business purposes and be able to travel within the Hospice catchment area)
  • Attending two training events per year as part of your Continuing Professional Development as well as Hospice mandatory training
  • As our service is an organisational member of BACP, volunteers need to be working within that framework and adhering to their ethical guidelines
  • Understanding and demonstrating relevant policies and procedures during your volunteering at St Michael’s Hospice, in particular confidentiality
