Lights of Love 2018

Each year Lights of Love offers the opportunity to make a tangible act of remembrance for loved ones no longer with us in the form of dedicating a star or heart on a Lights of Love tree. Whether your loved one received the care of St Michael’s Hospice or not, young or old, local or further afield, all can be remembered with Lights of Love. Every year hundreds of people join together in the simple act of writing a personal message on either a star or a heart which cover our beautiful trees (with thousands of dedications). Each star or heart will be placed next to a light on a tree at the location of your choice.

This year Lights of Love ceremonies will take place on Sunday 2nd December and Sunday 9th December and we will have trees in nine locations across Hastings and Rother. All services begin at 3pm, with a tree lighting ceremony at 4pm.

We will also host a non-religious Lights of Love ceremony at the Hospice on Wednesday 5th December at 6.30pm.

Most of the trees used for Lights of Love have kindly been donated by the award winning Little Down Farm.

Making a dedication
You can choose between traditional silver stars, large gold stars or white hearts. Simply write your dedication directly onto the shape, using a waterproof pen will ensure your message remains visible. Please do not use sticky tape or non-waterproof glue. Some people choose to write the name of their loved one, others write memories or messages, paint pictures, or add decorations or coloured ribbon for ease of identification. However you choose to complete your shape, it will be placed on a tree at your chosen location*.

Book of Remembrance
Each year, the names of all those commemorated during Lights of Love are entered into Books of Remembrance – unique to each of the nine locations. If you choose a location with multiple trees we will annotate the Book of Remembrance with the number of the tree your star is on. One book containing all the names will remain in the Hospice Chapel for the whole of 2019.

Returning Lights of Love dedications
Sadly we are unable to return individual stars and hearts. If you would like to keep a permanent momento of Lights of Love, we would be happy to provide an additional star or heart for you to decorate and keep.

Additional stars and hearts
You can get more stars and hearts at any of our St Michael’s Hospice shops (in Battle, Bexhill on Sea, Hastings, Ore, Rye, Sidley and St Leonards on Sea), St Michael’s Hospice reception by calling 01424 456377 or by emailing us.

If you are unable to attend one of our services why not have your own Lights of Love service at home, with our fine quality church candles? Our Lights of Love candles will be on sale at all our Lights of Love services, at our Hospice shops in Rye, Bexhill on Sea and Queens Road, Hastings or by mail order. Candles can be purchased for £3.50 per candle if bought from our shops or at our Lights of Love services or £5 by mail order (incl. postage & packaging).
